It can be partial and touch only the lip or total and touch the gum and the palate.
It can be unilateral (often left) or bilateral, symmetrical or asymmetrical, total or partial.
The diagnosis can be done early (around the 4th or 5th month) thanks to prenatal ultrasound.
Surgery intervenes from birth:
4th month for lip and gum (simple hare beak)
5th month for the nose, lip and soft palate
Around the 16th month for the vault of the palate (the bone part)
